Country Information
Large-scale information on forests was traditionally obtained by compiling stand-wise inventories carried out for forest management planning. Forest management plans are obligatory for all forests regardless their size, ownership and usage, and are elaborated every 10 years. In 2004 the implementation of the National Inventory and Forest Monitoring Program based on statistical sampling was decided. The field work for the first inventory cycle was carried out from 2005 to 2006. The NFI is based on a combination of field plot assessments and photo-interpretation. The inventory cycles will be conducted at intervals of 7 or 10 years.
