Forest resources data were based on stand-level inventories since the first half of the nineteenth century. Currently, these inventories provide the basic information necessary for forest management and forest owners are obliged to conduct a stand-level inventory every 10 years. The need for data collected with statistical sampling methods led to establishment of a sample-based inventory. The first cycle of the NFI was carried out in 2004–2008. The second cycle consisting of repeated measurements is scheduled for 2009–2013. The sampling design is based on clusters of permanent and temporary sample plots.
